Whales, Seals, Gulls and Cormorants
I went on a whale watching trip yesterday, out to the shore of San Juan Island. We saw a family of orca whales: mother Spirit and her grown children Skana and Solstice. We also saw a beach full of harbor seals and a rocky little island covered in cormorants and sea gulls. It was a very challenging trip for photography. The moving boat didn't make a stable platform to shoot from, and the whales were never visible for long. Skana treated us to breaching several times, and each time I missed him out of the water then slowly got things into focus for the end of the burst of shots, always as zoomed out as my lens could get. My photos aren't much but it was a great trip anyway! Despite living in this orca-rich area all my life I've never gone out to see them in person before.Harbor seals are good at looking friendly. This is a very small part of the group we saw.The following is a series of shots taken while Skana breached. I tried to swing my camera into position and get him in focus as soon as he appeared, but that took me too long. His splash is mighty impressive, though!
